Cheryl Katz Indulges Us On Where She Shops For Home Design Treasures
Friend and designer-extraordinaire Cheryl Katz recently offered up her favorite stores in the Boston area. If you were curious about where she goes to find home treasures and personal favorite items, read on.
Since founding C&J Katz Studio, Cheryl and Jeffrey Katz have designed dozens of residences as well as several well-known restaurants, (Including Barbara Lynch's gems, Menton , Sportello, Drink, B&G Oysters, and No 9 Park), retail shops, exhibits and workspaces. They’ve written books and hundreds of articles along the way and have garnered a fair share of awards and accolades, including their induction into the New England Design Hall of Fame in 2006.
So, if you want to discover exciting stores that have just what you need to give your home that perfect look, or if you are new in town and starting to decorate your space, take a look at the hidden treasures that Cheryl has generously shared with us.
If you are like us, you’re always on the prowl for a gem of a store, here are five of our local favorites. Listed in no particular order, these shops share similar traits. They’re small, well edited, bear the indelible stamp of their owners and are utterly charming. A visit to any of them insures that you won’t leave empty handed.
- Pod, 313 Washington Street, Brookline, 617 739 3802
- Good, 143 Charles Street, Boston, 617 523 5051
- Joanne Rossman Design, 6 Birch Street, Roslindale, 617 323 4301
- Patch, NYC, The Courtyard, 46 Waltham Street, Boston, 917 292 2640
- 12 Chairs, 319 A Street, Boston, 617 701 3496
A couple of weeks ago, on a beautiful, unseasonably warm Saturday, we meandered through Boston’s South End and fell in love with these (apologies to Jack Nicholson) five easy pieces.
- From Lekker Home, tableware from Mud Australia. Don’t be fooled by its delicate appearance, it’s dishwasher and microwave safe.
- From Michelle Willey, Middle Kingdom’s fine porcelain vases. Visually strong enough to stand alone, the vases also look great in a group.
- From Hudson, Lyndsay Maver’ssophisticated artful terrariums that Lyndsay calls Lynzariums.
- From Reside, South End, a pair of brass Nessen table lamps from the 1960s. Paired with bright green 1950s lamp shades, they’re bound to be scooped up soon.
- From Gracie Finn, Susy Pilgrim Waters fab new line of notecards.
A few of these stores are current favorites of mine and I am thrilled to learn about more. Hoping you feel the same. Voila!

Terrarium Trend
I am loving the terrarium moment that has been out there for a while now. I remember an earlier wave of terrarium trend many years ago, when instead of a dirt bed there were repetitive layers of different colored sand! Anyone?
I'm SO glad that that particular element has not made the leap this time around.
I'm personally partial to the more simply made varieties, the ones that highlight only one or two beautiful plants, and some of the take-offs on the trend - like simply covering a pretty plant with a cloche. Cover something with glass and it is magically elevated to new heights of interest! Why is that?
If you're thumbs are less than green, Hudson in Boston and Wellesley has some really beautiful examples, planted in a variety of fantastic vessels.
And for fun, click on Lynzariums in their Blog roll to see how they are created!

Lynzariums Terrariums
Lizzy over at Puddin’ Pie took this photo of a darling and different table design by 100 Layer Cake. I believe she came upon it at a Hitched event.
The little fern, cactus and succulent remind me of the lynzariums created by Lyndsay Maver of Hudson.
Aren’t they so gentle, unassuming, and almost, sort of, ladybug-cute? And look how creative she gets. Hello, ellie.
A copper urn and a vintage trunks? Brilliant.
Talk about a way to give back – The terrarium that Lyndsay made for me in a vintage jar about a year ago looks up from my desk cheerfully at me every single morning and is the ultimate in eco-friendly. It’s even expanded into two terrariums in the last few months.
What a great present for your green-loving or design-savvy friends who know that terrariums have been quite the thing over the last year. With Lyndsay in the mix, creating everything from single custom orders to wedding decor, I think they are here to stay.
